About Maureen

A life of caring, creativity and storytelling

Born and raised in Glasgow and now living in County Sligo, Ireland, Maureen Howley’s life has taken her from nursing and midwifery to public health, radio, musical theatre and, eventually, writing.

Throughout those different chapters, one thing has remained constant: a fascination with people, their experiences and the stories that shape their lives.

Writing has long been part of Maureen’s life, through poetry, songs, verses and plays. Small Shoes, Impossible to Fill is her first long form book, born from conversations with her mother and a desire to preserve memories before they disappeared.

“Writing has always helped me make sense of life, of the world.”
